“Along Came Polly”
In my quest to bring you the most important insurance news, I do manage to locate fun topics from time to time. Believe it or not, there are several entertaining movies about insurance. I recently watched “Along Came Polly,” with Ben Stiller and Jennifer Aniston. It’s a goofy little comedy (my favorite kind), with a plot based around insurance. Basically, Reuben (Ben Stiller) is a stiff insurance actuary who follows a very rigid and planned-out lifestyle. He meets Polly (Jennifer Aniston), a spontaneous drifter, and fireworks and antics ensue. The movie was largely panned, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
At one point in the movie, Reuben is torn between Polly and another woman. So, as any nerdy insurance assessor would do, he uses the risk assessment software at his workplace to determine which woman is the better match. I started thinking – wouldn’t that be great? If we had a computer software to assess risk in our relationships, we could make all sorts of life decisions with better results!
But of course, human beings are endlessly complex and ever-changing, so I doubt a risk analysis would yield very accurate results. Besides, how can one quantify the human emotion? And that’s exactly the point of the movie. No matter how hard you try to analyze a relationship based on what you think are the cold, hard facts, you simply cannot quantify the value of love. Sometimes we love beyond all sense and reason, and that factor alone has the power to trump all others.
