Insurance consumer advocacy organization United Policyholders has combined forces with Professor Jay M. Feinman at Rutgers University to research the treatment of insurance consumers during their homeowners claims – and how effectively their state laws are protecting them. While I am also a researcher of consumer insurance issues and like to consider myself pretty knowledgeable, I found their results to be both enlightening and useful. The most easily digestible piece is their State Rankings. Check out the photo below to see how your state ranks.
For more information on these ranking and how states are protecting (or failing to protect) insurance consumers, go to the Rutgers Essential Protections for Policyholders page, or browse the very helpful website of United Policyholders.
