The movie “Hook” was released in 1991, starring Robin Williams, Dustin Hoffman, and Julia Roberts. I happened to see pieces of the movie while traveling recently, and heard Robin Williams (as grown up Peter Pan, a lawyer) exclaim to Rufio, the leader of the Lost Boys:
You’re not old enough to shave! What are you doing with a sword? And flying around… this is an insurance nightmare! What is this, some sort of “Lord of the Flies” preschool? Where are your parents? Who’s in charge, here?
Immediately I thought these words were probably not part of the movie script, but came straight from the creative genius of Robin Williams. His mind was so quick, and he was so clever – he could throw funny quips at the audience faster than they could finish laughing at the joke before.
As for an insurance nightmare – yes, indeed. The only insurance the land of Peter Pan and the Lost Boys could possibly obtain would have to be a surplus line.*
Robin Williams Lives On, In Our Hearts
I love Robin Williams. He has always been my favorite American actor, so as you can imagine, when he passed away I felt the loss as heavily as any of his loyal fans. And if you read my blog, you also know that I also reside in the same town as Williams did, so I’ve seen him around town over the years. I even saw him the day before he passed away. This made his passing even more of a shock.
In honor of Robin, the legislators of Marin decided to name the tunnel from Marin to San Francisco the “Robin Williams Tunnel.” The tunnel was already very cool, with sweeping views of the city on one side and a rainbow painted around the entry. Now we also have a sign reminding us that Robin Williams was an integral part of Marin, and of our hearts.
